Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition, and Mind-Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the Time

What does it take to make you feel "high"? Do you routinely reach for caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, or sugary snacks to get you through the day? Unfortunately, the quick fixes we have become accustomed to don't work long-term, and often contribute further to the underlying problems of fatigue, depression, brain fog, and anxiety. In Natural Highs, two leading authorities in psychology and nutrition present a prescriptive breakthrough program based on nutritional supplements, herbs, and simple mind-body therapies that will help to increase energy, sharpen the mind, elevate mood, relax the body, and beat stress. Their remarkable research shows how to formulate the perfect "brainfood" to improve how we think and feel, resulting in a greater sense of connection and joy in everyday life-the natural high.

Amazon.com Review Boundless energy awaits anyone willing to trade their cigs, drugs, or lattés for the healthier alternatives prescribed in Natural Highs. According to authors Hyla Cass, M.D., and Patrick Holford, the first step toward bliss is eating right. In their lean yet satisfying nutrition chapter, they advocate a fairly even ratio of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; plenty of water; high-potency multivitamins; and minerals. After establishing this balanced diet, those seeking to "get high" or "chill out" can select from a menu of natural supplements and substances: various stress busters, energizers, and mood enhancers that research shows can mimic--or surpass--the appealing effects of stimulants like caffeine, sugar, and nicotine or sedatives like dope, alcohol, and tranquilizers. Best of all, these good vibrations allegedly come without the typical letdowns or addictions. Historical tidbits, ample charts and diagrams, scientific data, and case studies from the authors' practices create a compelling argument for natural alternatives, including kava, ginseng, choline, and DMAE. Helpful sidebars outline the positive effects, cautions (rarely any), and recommended dosages associated with each item. Cass and Holford also delve into uplifting lifestyle enhancements like meditation, massage, dance, and sexual chemistry. Lots of reference material rounds out this guide to healthy--and legal--mood magic. --Liane Thomas Review "Here's a book that should be on everyone's shelf. Practical, accessible information to help you feel good more of Robert Kall I have known Dr. Cass's work a few years and yes, the expected quality. But this book is even better than I expected, in terms of breadth and depth it covers. It includes mood, energy, entertainment, entheogens, memory, stress busters --- more.Knowing Dr. Cass and many earlier books on herbal practice, I expect a naturopath based approach to natural highs. But this book covers all kinds of high natural ways, to feel good anymore, like color therapy, biofeedback, aromatherapy, massage, meditation and much more. The list of resources and tools in the back of the book is probably worth the price alone. This book gives a lot of great ways to naturally high without drugs. I am especially interested in additions to sharpen the mind and will try some of them. Finally, the book takes an integrated approach to positive states, as an enlightened and positive approach to psychology, the book also explains how to get off addictive drugs. Putting it all together, and this book is a good news. 25 of 26 people found this review helpful. Finally something useful! By one account, do not know about you, but I am tired of books about health and nutrition, to go on and on technical details without providing any real information I can use. That's why I appreciated the direct approach of Natural Highs. The authors explain clearly how to feel better and it just works. The descriptions of the neurotransmitters and brain chemistry are adequate without being boring. Recommendations supplements are white and well balanced. Important as breathing techniques and meditation are also included. This book is readable and even entertaining. If you're curious about the natural ways to relax or improve your mood, give it a try! 25 of 26 people found this large amount of useful information that everyone can benefit. Piercepeter for the first time I came to this book because I was looking for help with the symptoms I was experiencing severe withdrawal from no longer taking Prozac. Natural highs opened his eyes to the existence of not one but several natural supplements that help me to improve balance and blended after Prozac serotonin levels. In addition, many of these supplements are apparently as good or better than drugs to significantly improve problems with depression, anxiety, etc., in the long term - without side effects. This book is well written, well researched and organized, and provides clear and concise easy to read. If the utility of the presence and importance of these natural supplements are better known and larger pharmaceutical companies have less money, power and influence, I truly believe that our world may well be happier, well adjusted and make the site functional all 13 customer reviews ....
