Review From the reviews: “This high quality book can be read and understood by many different people in the health professions and those who are very interested in their own supplementation strategies. This book will be very useful to me in my profession as I encounter questions regarding nutritional supplements on a daily basis. It teaches readers how to self-educate and how to identify false and misleading claims, something I have not seen in any other books. It is also better than others in the field because it does not go into such depth that readers get lost, but it does provide more detail than just the basics of nutritional supplements. This book can complement many nutritional strategies and many other sports nutrition books and should be in the library of any health professionals who work with the active population.” (Allison Maurer, MS, RD, CSSD, CSCS, University of Tennessee at Knoxville) "This book provides detailed analysis of nutritional supplementation, supported by scientific research regarding sports and exercise performance. … Summing Up: Optional. Upper-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers." (A. H. Goldfarb, Choice, Vol. 46 (8), April, 2009) "Nutritional Supplements in Sports and Exercise begins by discussing legal and psychological aspects of sports supplements, followed by chapters on the nutrient and hydration needs of athletes and those engaged in regular exercise. … All the chapters are written in an easily understood style that requires no science background or technical expertise. … particularly useful for personal trainers, coaches and anyone who wants to know the scientific details related to sports nutrition … ." (Jerry Brainum, Iron Man Magazine, July, 2009) “The book sets forth a thorough review of the available evidence for or against dietary supplementation—from micronutrients to macronutrients and from individual to combinational dietary supplement regimes—summarizing the available evidence in well-referenced chapters. … Nutritional Supplements in Sports and Exercise is an important bookshelf reference for clinicians who work with athletes or physically active individuals. … this book provides sufficient guidance regarding overall eating recommendations during physical activity to make it worth the purchase.” (Cynthia A. Thomson, Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 303 (18), 2010) From the Back Cover In the ever-growing field of sports nutrition and nutritional supplementation, it is imperative to have a comprehensive and extensive guide, which is exactly what Nutritional Supplements in Sports and Exercise provides. Spirituality and Meaning in Health Care: A Dutch Contribution to an Ongoing Discussion (Studies in Spirituality Supplements)

In modern health care humanity is at stake. The relationship between those seeking and those providing care increasingly takes place within the framework of technological or legislative issues. The whole human being needing care threatens to disappear from view. Yet there also is a counter movement demanding attention for the spiritual component: after all, spirituality and meaning are inherent facets in people's care. In this collection of essays, Spirituality and Meaning in Health Care is approached from various perspectives, including theological, philosophical, organisational, ethical, medical, nursing and legal. The contributions deal with the phenomenon of spirituality, interaction between care seeker and care giver, policy and quality, the spirituality of the professional, and the place of spirituality and meditation in supervision of people with cancer. This book provides stimulus for ongoing discussions on this important theme.

Very comprehensive - stands out from others on the shelf By A Customer I bought this book because a friend of ours has prostate cancer and I wanted to be more informed. There are a lot of titles on the "shelf" in this area - nutrition and cancer, vitamins, supplements, megadoses, minerals, what to eat and what not to eat. Some of them have extraordinary claims for cures. There are a lot of philosophies on diet, which doesn't help a cancer patient when they need sound information rather than opinions and beliefs about food. Perhaps there would be less of this confusion if conventional medical treatment started to use nutrition as a part of mainstream cancer treatment.I must say that I am really pleased with this book. As I get into it, the content gets better and better - a sign of a well informed and thorough piece of work. Dr Blaylock is very realistic about his purpose and doesn't make extraordinary claims. Instead he systematically reveals & explains the current research about vitamins and supplements, always in the context of cancer. He has a prevailing view that "fresh is best" and qualifies this. It seems to me he also has a hopeful tone, which is sometimes missing from practitioners.I have always been interested in the findings and ideas of Dr Linus Pauling (eg see ISBN 094015921 and ISBN 0380702894) and also Dr Abram Hoffer (eg see ISBN 1550820788). Pauling has been decried by some (though the results of these two doctors' work speak for themselves). For me, this book represents in part a confirmation of their ideas, although the book is less prescriptive than the above and has a broader perspective on diet. One of the central themes in this book is the immune system, and how to strengthen it. Blaylock is careful to indicate where certain foods or supplements actually encourage rather than inhibit cancer growth. He is also good at providing ammunition for the patient to be able to face some of the resistance that arises from physicians who are dubious about the role and value of nutrition in treatment.I gave this book four stars not five, for a couple of reasons. If there had been a summary or tables or suggested outline programme to help the patient construct their own nutrition regime, this would have hit the bell! As it stands, I will dig through the chapters and index to glean a summary of points to put into an action plan. I was also hoping to find a website with some level of currency and discussion about the book - patients asking questions, an updated resource list, general advice, a blog perhaps, or supplemental material. In a word, 'support'. (See http://www.russellblaylockmd.com).Overall, a very good book: readable, thorough, very comprehensive, practical and a good reference - recommended. 97 of 99 people found the following review helpful. Great guidance from a cancer doctor By Bill Henderson Dr. Blaylock has gathered all the information you need to understand the importance of combining natural substances with your cancer treatment. He describes all chemotherapy drugs in great detail. I was lucky enough to discover this book just as I was leaving home to travel to Fort Worth, Texas. I was going there to help a young man convince his ex-wife that nine different chemo drugs were not going to cure their 7-year old son of his leukemia without supplementation with natural substances. While my wife drove, I read Dr. Blaylock's book. It was as if he were speaking directly to me and the ex-wife. He explained, for example, that none of the drugs being used on Jeffrey had ever been tested together for harmful synergies. None of them had ever been tested on children. When I gave Dr. Blaylock's book to the ex-wife at the courthouse in Fort Worth, I said a prayer that she would read it. She did. She withdrew her case against her ex-husband and they worked out a natural regimen for Jeffrey. It worked. Within a few weeks, Jeffrey was

Regarding the lack of controlled clinical trials, of course they're lacking. These substances are not patentable. Drug companies cannot bottle them and charge 9 bucks a pill, so the trials will not be forth coming anytime soon! I've purchased the book, and tried almost every supplement reviewed, and have found some real gems. Quite a few of the herbs I'd never heard of before, even though I've been experimenting with natural supplements for years. I like the authors approach, because he's conservative on his dosage recommendations, he does not make wild, outlandish claims about these supplements, and he readily admits when clinical trails are lacking. What else could you ask for ? If you're looking for a boost in the libido department, I think you'll be happy with this book. 21 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Silly Book By Master Hahn Primarily this book simply proves that most of these compounds do NOT work - and what little advance is detected is likely due to a mild placebo effect. Pretty much each chapter (covering a separate substance) is the same. It starts out with a disclaimer that "there have been no human trials" on this substance (and in most cases no animal trials either... and where trials were conducted, massive doses were used or no measurable changes were detected - and in most cases the ones conducting the "study" (which is never fully cited of course)are clearly biased due to their involvement in promoting the product (like most Maca "research" is done by Peruvian government funded researchers who have a bias towards creating a new - and high income - cash crop for Peru's agriculture business. The rest of the author's "examination of the substances" consist of two parts. First, he takes the product himself - sometimes just for one day! - and the reports what he noticed "different". No double-blind, placebo controlled testing, no blood testing of hormone levels, etc., etc. And then he concludes by throwing in one or two anecdotal reports from one of his patients as to the positive effect they supposedly had with this substance. Also he marginalizes the cost factor of taking the much, much larger amounts of some of these compounds that need to be taken to achieve the "supposed effect". One having hormonal-deficient sexual problems (libido, ED, etc.) would be much better off (including financially) to get their hormone tested and then - if necessary go on a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) program using NATURAL bio-identical hormones as needed! Would not waste my money on this book. This author has this same type of junk scattered across the Internet - and is just as foolish in his other "scientific reporting". Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever

In 2004, Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman, MD, published Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever. Their groundbreaking book marshaled thousands of scientific studies to make the case that new developments in medicine and technology will allow us to radically extend our life expectancies and slow down the aging process. Soon, our notion of what it means to be a 55-year-old will be as outdated as an eight-track tape player.

From Publishers Weekly According to futurist Kurzweil (The Singularity is Near) and homeopathic medical doctor Grossman (The Baby Boomer's Guide to Living Forever), medicine is transforming into an information technology, which by its nature advances at an exponential rate. Thus, those interested in "radical life extension" must make it their immediate goal to live through the next 20 or so years, in order to see advances like DNA reprogramming and submicroscopic, cell-repairing robots. This "guide to Bridge One" outlines nine areas: talking with your doctor, relaxation, assessment, nutrition, supplementation, calorie reduction, exercise, new technologies, and detoxification. Familiar common-sense health advice abounds, but is practical and thorough; along with one to five cups of green tea each day, the authors provide low-cal recipes like Ginger Turkey Burgers and Herbed Zucchini. A detailed exercise routine for aerobic and weight training is also included. Kurzweil and Grossman, who last explored this subject together in 2005's Fantastic Voyage, also look at supplements, medical tests and hormone "optimization"; happily, chapters on calorie reduction and detoxification avoid trendy, potentially dangerous approaches. Whether or not it's true that, within two decades, we'll have the tools to live forever, this is an intelligent, optimistic guide to healthy living, with an intriguing view of medicine's future. If you want to have the greatest chance of seeing the next century, read TRANSCEND today." —Dean Ornish, MD, founder and president, Preventive Medicine Research Institute; clinical professor of medicine, University of California, San Francisco; author, The Spectrum and Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease

Most helpful customer reviews 663 of 668 people found the following review helpful. TRANSCEND IS a good plan for living well... By Bob Blum if not forever. I stressed over what grade to give Transcend and ultimately gave it an Amazon **** grade (say, B+). Why that high? Why only that high? First, I'm an MD, PhD with 30 years of clinical practice and 10 years of medical research. (Google bobblum.com or just "Bob Blum") Ray Kurzweil was a classmate of mine at MIT in the sixties. I just met Terry at the Foresight Convergence Conference in 2008. I had read Fantastic Voyage, their first joint effort, several times and always had a hard time deciding whether to recommend it to friends and colleagues. 80% of Fantastic Voyage was first rate information. 20% was highly controversial, fringe medicine (alkaline water and obscure supplements). I complained to Ray in a letter expressing concern about his personal health - 250 pills a day is just too many, portending too many interactions - and also to Terry. My advice was to please label or rate the scientific evidence that forms a basis for each of their drug recommendations. Terry told me that their forthcoming book TRANSCEND would solve the problem. It DOES. Most of that controversial 20% has been surgically removed. Gone is much of the pseudoscience. What's left follows closely (and expands) the world according to Drs. Dean Ornish, Andrew Weil, and many other admirable health writers. The book summarizes the best of current medical advice on how to stay healthy. If you're not a health professional and have not read many books like this I would strongly recommend it. So, for most of you that's my advice... buy the book (and live by it). Now, I'll be more specific. TRANSCEND is a mnemonic for their health recommendations: Talk to your doctor, Relaxation, Assessment, Nutrition, Supplements, Calorie Reduction, Exercise, New Tech, Detoxification. That's a worthy list. In re: Talk to your doctor and Assessments. Much of this is a list of tests to request, and as they rightly state, many of these tests will not be covered by insurance. This means you will have hundreds of dollars in unreimbursed expenses for tests of unproven efficacy. During my meeting with Terry at Convergence he emphasized the importance of carotid ultrasound and coronary calcium scoring for men over 45 or women over 55. I totally concur. There is nothing like seeing the calcium plaque in your arteries to put the fear of the Lord into you. However, for many of the other tests (neurotransmitter levels, mineral analysis, digestive function, eg) it is unclear how often, if ever, the tests should be done. With the country's economy in tatters and healthcare already climbing toward 20% of GDP some of these tests will always be for the well-to-do, worried well. In re: Nutrition. I bristled when I saw that 66 pages were devoted to low fat recipes, since (IMHO) this is usually a worthless page-filler. However, I've changed my mind on this. In this era when so many foods that are readily available are condemned (most fats, much of animal protein, fast carbs) readers want to know "ok, so what DO I eat?" I actually made their soy yogurt Waldorf Salad, the quinoa, and the zucchini and have lost 3 pounds from my usually cerebrotonic, ectomorphic frame. Basically, folks, this is where to get your vitamins and minerals. As Mark Bittman (NY Times Food Critic) says, "it's the carrot, not the beta carotene." I single out for especial praise their Transcend Food Pyramid - they nailed it - veggies and water are the base. In re: Supplements. This is the arena in which Ray and Terry were particularly on thin ice in Fantasic Voyage. Ray's mammoth daily consumption of supplements to "reprogram his biochemistry" is notorious. I was delighted to see that their public recommendations for supplements have been greatly toned down. Whether this reflects a change in their own personal consumption is not stated. Since I'm a great fan of Ray's

Everything he produces is packed with good information that is understandable and usable. He also doesn't fall into that trap of just repeating what he wrote in previous books. Each one shows thorough research and an understanding of how these nutritional supplements are an asset to our health. A site that I have found which dovetails nicely with Mindell's research is PapaNature. I have used Mindell's book to double check their documentation and between that and their good product choices I have been impressed. They must have Mindell's books in their own library. By Joseph Sewell Books about vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other supplements, such as those Mindell and others have written, are great. But I've got thus-and-so problem; what should I do about it? This book answers those questions. You've just been diagnosed with arthritis? Try the items mentioned in this book, plus the other suggestions (including the dreaded "eat less and exercise" :) ) Mindell proposes. EVERYONE interested in healing with fewer prescription drugs should read this book! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Handy Reference! By Randy J. Mercurio I agree with the other two reviews up until the date of this one. Although this book was published in 1997 the information it contains is really not outdated in any way. You can see the list of items in the table of contents (click cover for "look inside" feature) that this book covers. Each ailment is briefly described along with some general comments and suggestions. Following these descriptions are individual vitamins, minerals, herbs and personal advice that can assist with each ailment. You may find yourself wanting to know more about the vitamins, minerals and herbs so I recommend any book by this author to supplement information you seek on these topics. A proper diet and keeping properly hydrated is key to getting the most out of these supplements and don't overdose! See all 3 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Ultra-Conservative Approach By Christopher J. Alexander, Ph.D. Dr. Shane-McWhorter does a good job of reviewing most of the major supplements people with diabetes sometimes take. Unfortunately, her concluding comment and recommendation for many of them is to proceed cautiously and avoid most of them. This isn't to say she's wrong; the research on the use of supplements with diabetics is thin at best. Even so, her review of the research focuses almost exclusively on diabetes and fails to take into account the ways various supplements have been shown to assist with different conditions. The book does offer good food-for-thought, but it falls along the lines of those doctors who say, "Just take your medication and maybe a multivitamin, but nothing more." In this updated and expanded second edition, he provides the latest information on proper hydration and deacidification, important alkalizing supplements, and how to eliminate the body’s accumulated acids through intestinal cleansing. He also includes a new, detailed example of an alkaline detoxifying diet and explains how to design a diet best suited for your particular health needs. By Dora I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue some years ago, and I have been suffering from bad digestive problems, insomnia and various other ailments for a long time. This book has made a huge difference to my life. I came to it thinking I knew quite a lot about diet and nutrition, but it has opened my eyes. Most importantly, it has made me understand why some "healthy" foods that many nutritionists insist are "really good for you" make me feel unwell. Of course asparagus, onions and garlic are "really good" for many people, but sadly they're not good for me. I feel unwell when I eat them, and Vasey is the first person who has given me an explanation that feels right: they are sulfurous vegetables, and sulfur being an acid, they can be hard to handle for a system that's become as weak and sensitized to acids as mine. There were many other revelations. You come across so much conflicting advice, sometimes it's hard to know what to believe. Some people tell you to eat lots of fruit "because they're alkalizing". Others, like Young, tell you not to eat them "because of the sugar". Who do you believe ? Well, neither advice made sense to me because my own experience was different. How could fruit be alkalizing when I felt so unwell after eating most of them ? Yet how could it be because of the sugar since I was doing well on "sugary" bananas ? Again, it is Vasey who has given me the answers: for some people fruit are alkalizing, for others they are acidifying. It depends on the person. Some people's systems aren't able to metabolize fruit acids, and therefore eating fruit can acidify them even more, but since the banana's acid content is too weak to cause acidification it is usually well tolerated by them. I believe Vasey is right because of personal experience. Tomatoes, too, make me feel unwell, and he confirms that they're very acidic. The list goes on. In fact, this book has been one long confirmation of my "gut feeling". What a relief to finally find someone who's spelling out what my body has been telling me for years ! I just wish I'd listened to it sooner. Vasey is a godsend, and I believe he really knows what he's talking about. So I'm puzzled by some of the other reviews here. One reader even claims that Vasey says soy is alkaline. Did we read the same book ? Vasey in fact says soy is a potent acidifier, it only becomes alkalizing if it is sprouted. It is Young who champions soy, not Vasey. The supplement section in this book is indeed useless. The author is Swiss, and there is a tradition of taking alkalizing powders in continental Europe, where you can find them quite easily in the shops. It's not so easy here. I did try the mail order addresses mentioned, but the products didn't work for me. I even wonder how much Vasey actually had to do with the mail order addresses for the American edition of his book, as he would never have approved of some of the products on offer there. He would never have approved of a product that includes lots of phosphorus, for example, as it's simply too acidic for a sensitive system to cope with. So yes, this section is a weak point. It's not that big a deal, though. We have excellent calcium/magnesium citrate supplements in the shops here, and they do the trick for me. It's also true that this book doesn't give you detailed eating plans and recipes the way some books do. What it does give you is a lot of invaluable information. Vasey understands that there will never be a "one size fits all" diet that works for everyone. Every'body' is different, and ultimately you have to find out for yourself what works for you. Nobody can do that for you. Of course not everything in this book will be right for you, I don't eat dairy, for example. But Vasey has given me the information and confidence I needed to work out the right diet for ME. The most important thing of

What your face reveals about you By Kathy W After you read this little book, you will likely never look at faces in quite the same way again. This 1983 book, originally published in London, is only 77 pages in length plus 5 pages of suggested readings, info about the writers, and an index. The cover states it is an introduction to oriental diagnosis and what your face reveals about you and your health. The preface explains that oriental diagnosis views the physical and mental aspects of the total person, in addition to the troubled organs or body parts. The analysis includes an interpretation of the person's lifestyle, including both environmental and social surroundings. The booklet explains a bit about Yin and Yang, the diet, development of the embryo, sections of the face and the corresponding major body systems (nervous, digestion, and circulation). We look at the structure of the face, where certain lines develop on the face (and their meaning), eyes, eyebrows, eyelids, blinking, the shape and size of the mouth, the relationships of different parts of the lips to the digestive system, the teeth, the ears, the hair, balding in certain areas in relationship to weakness of certain organs, the skin coloration (red, yellow, green, blue, purple, blackness, grey, pallor, transparency, whitedness/white spots, texture, oily, wet) and what each means, lines in the hands, nails, energy meridians in the body, pulses, voice, hearing, handwriting slants, habits, food advice, and giving advice to people. There is a heck of a lot of info in this book. The down-side is that you will probably find yourself studying obvious lines and characteristics that you see on people, especially if they have a strong influence in your life. The up-side is that you can possibly help yourself by spotting and correcting certain weaknesses before they do permanent damage. You might also be able to help others close to you, if they are willing to listen. If you are a practitioner of some kind, even in subtle energy therapies, you may be able to provide additional information to your clients. Look to this book to provide you with additional insight/clues to better health, to help you discover or investigate issues before they do damage. Do not use it to replace your medical health care professional. 27 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Good, buy expected more. By A Customer I thought the book was very interesting. I good start. I was expecting it to be a little more in depth on the face reading. Instead, there was more about macrobiotics than I expected. It was somewhat of an advertisement for this topic. Otherwise, I found it to be very helpful. 24 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. A landmark event for nutraceuticals was the creation of the market itself. In 1989, Stephen Defelice, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, coined the term "nutraceutical" as a means to classify foods, beverages and supplements that provide medical or health benefits to consumers, "including the prevention and treatment of disease." The term is a marrying of the words "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical." And because the types of products are so varied--there are foods, drinks, powders, pills, capsules, and more--the packaging of nutraceuticals takes on many forms. Thus, a niche of the labeling industry has developed, and like the products they are designed to brand, inform and communicate a message about, their labeling and packaging is diverse, complicated...

By A Customer I purchased this small companion book along with the big hardcover "Eat Right for Your Bloood Type." My 77-year-old uncle had convinced me that my family history (all blood type A+) indicated that I would benefit from following the eating plan. His comments and his experience were very persuasive. If you accept the validity of Dr. D'Adamo's approach, there's no need to open the big book right away. With this small companion book, one can get down to business. By focusing on highly beneficial foods and avoiding the "poison" foods, it's easy to change your food selections and preparation style. You can take the book into supermarkets, specialty foods stores and restaurants as a handy guide. You can bring it with you on vacation, business trips and dinner parties. You will quickly get a sense for the highly beneficial foods that you most enjoy. The book also makes it easy to experiment! In many ways, using this book makes it fun to eat. It's easy to go meatless quickly. Yes ... one can even enjoy tofu (it's not bad ... really!). There are lots of great alternatives for protein that allow you variety and flexibility. It's still a good idea to read the big book. But you can change your life right away with this small companion! I truly can feel a difference in my health after just two weeks. 33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. great reference book By M. Jackson I found this book extremely helpful in making great food choices. Though I was skeptical at first, I lost 6 pounds in eating according to the plan in the first 2 weeks. When I follow the diet, I have more energy, feel healthier, and lose weight. I highly recommend this dieting tool. 31 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Proof that we know ourselves best. By Renata Kushnir My whole life I've been battling with my mother over the foods that I eat. She always made me eat meat and when i told her that I feel sick after red meat she would tell me I'm silly. A couple of years ago I stopped eating oranges and tangerines because I broke out from them and once again my mother laughed at me. She criticized me for not eating a lot of foods. I picked up a copy of the A type food and beverage list and it turns out I was right all along to reject those foods because they are poisonous to me! I fell in love with this diet because what i feel for myself and what the doctor (author) says, is the same thing! (of course giving up cheese and olives will be hard) I can trully relate to this diet. See all 56 customer reviews...

For" Physio-Techno Junkies" By A Customer This is a well-researched book written by two exercise physiologists with contributions from scientists and University Professors-and it SOUNDS it! Not to discredit the authors but it's NOT what i would call "user-friendly".Its presentation is too technical and phrasiology too scientific. You have to read mainy lines several times over just to understand what the heck they're saying. It's MORE OFA DISSERTATION FROM PhD'S FOR OTHER PhD'S at a BIO-CHEMISTRY SYMPOSIUM. It's not meant for the average person or novice who simply wants to enhance their knowledge of sports supplements. This book, as good as it may sound, will NOT be a welcome addition to your library-you'll end up wanting to give it away or sell it to re-coup your cost. You're FAR BETTER OFF purchasing "THE ERGOGENICS EDGE" by DR. Brasco and Rubin recommend. I take only one supplement now (after learning about it in this book), and it's not a brand they listed. They offer alternatives for people who have difficulty finding things and for the "Budgetarily Challenged". Their suggestions helped me tailor a plan that works for me. Their explanations of diseases, and conventional and alternative treatments enabled me to make better choices, ask my doctors for the right tests, and be an active partner in my treatment. I had followed the advice of some other authors-and I got worse. In this book Dr. Rubin shares how he triumphed over his own digestive disease, and Dr. Brasco shares his clinical successes with his patients. They know what they're talking about. There's a wealth of valuable information in the resources and books they recommend. This book is helping me regain my health and I feel very fortunate to have found it. 70 of 71 people found the following review helpful. Besides any Commercial issues, these recomendations work!! By Ricardo Chavarria A little background first I have Post Infectious IBS for 2 years now. It started after taking large amounts of antibiotics to heal from pneumonia. Feeling very bad as most IBS sufferers, I tried several diets, went to a lot of GI doctors and even tried acupuncture, reflexology, ... you name it. I took antidepressants for a while to help me with my mood since I felt so bad in times that I didn't even want to work or even get out of home. I lost 40 pounds so far. Since January 2005, I read these books (I put a personal rating to each one, related to how much it helped me with my IBS, in parenthesis from 1 to 5, being 5 the best score): Breaking the Vicious Cycle - Elaine Gotschall (3) Eating Right for a bad Gut - James Scala (2) Total health Program - Joseph Mercola (3) Metabolic Type Dieting - William Linz Wolcott, Trish Fahey (1) I recently read "Restoring Your Digestive Health" (5) To the point: Besides the fact that many, if not everyone, of the people who write this kind of books look for some sort of monetary earnings (and many do that just for the money), there always stays the fact about whether the material presented has a real value or not. In other words, do the programs and recommendations in this book really work? For me they did. In fact it is my personal opinion that this book encloses many of the concepts that I've been studying for the past year. It gives you a brief explanation about many of them. In that respect at least, I wished I had bought this book before the other ones, since in the end it is like a little reference of them. Bad luck. Of course I don't agree with many things, for instance the "structured water" suplement, since based on other sources I read, it is very controversial an in many aspects without scientific background, although the authors may recommend it based on their clinical experience rather than anything else. More probably I think, they are trying to encourage people to buy their supplements (who can blame them). So back to the main point here, maybe the authors are willing that the readers go out and buy some of their supplements, but the issue here is whether the Guts and Glory program works. It will be fair to mention that the authors never tell you not to have any conventional drugs nor they force you to have any supplements. They even give you a "Low Budget" alternative where you'll never even buy a supplement, although they argue it will take you longer to heal. I think the authors are more objective than the more radical approaches of the other books I read. And of course, MOST importantly, I've been in the Guts and Glory program for 4 weeks and I feel BETTER than years!!!!. I know it's only my word, but I'm being honest here. I'm talking the Brasco Broth everyday, and I'm not

The Oxford Book of Health Foods

The health food industry is a billion-dollar business in the United States today and is thriving worldwide. However, despite the widespread consumption of these foods, little information is available to validate their actual therapeutic and nutritional value. The Oxford Book of Health Foods is a comprehensive, up-to-date, and scientifically based guide to a variety of foods associated with good health. From fruits, herbs, and grains to vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements, this new resource offers not only the claims associated with each food, but also the scientific truths behind these claims. Written in elegant and accessible prose, the book begins with an account of modern concepts of human nutrition, followed by a series of over one hundred entries on individual health foods and dietary supplements. Each entry provides full information on the food's origins, a thorough description, the claims and myths associated with it, and the scientific evidence to support--or refute--these claims. Beautifully illustrated throughout with botanical drawings, electron micrograph scans, and photographs (all in full color), the text is further supplemented by a glossary explaining the more technical terms and a bibliography listing sources for further reading. A straightforward and authoritative reference, The Oxford Book of Health Foods is a must-have for all who are interested in general health and nutrition.

Methyl Magic: Maximum Health Through Methylation

Text, for consumers, describing strategies based on the body's simplest chemical grouping: the methyl group. Details supplements, diet, and exercise strategies for boosting a person's methyl power for increased energy, a trimmer shape, and a healthy mental attitude.

Amazon Sales Rank: #295942 in Books Published on: 1999-05-15 Original language: English Number of items: 1 Binding: Hardcover 253 pages

From Booklist Biochemist Cooney sees the chemical process of methylation as the "central control dial" of life, and a simple test can determine whether one needs to improve it. Unfortunately, many physicians are unaware of the importance of methylation, so they need convincing about what a vital role it plays and why their patients need to have the test done. Proper foods (potatoes are out) and vitamin supplements encourage proper methylation, and with proper methylation, one can avoid heart disease, birth defects, autoimmune diseases, allergies--even depression, Alzheimer's, and schizophrenia. Memory can be improved, and aging and the signs of aging staved off. Cooney and his writing collaborator give the brand names of helpful vitamins and where they can be obtained. The first appendix discusses good, medium, and bad foods for assisting methylation, citing brands; the second contains "Methyl Magic Recipes"; and the third lists sources for more information. Methylation seems an up-and-comer in health and nutrition. Libraries, be prepared. William Beatty Review SAMe (known formally as S-adenosylmethionine) is not an herb or a hormone. It's a molecule that all living cells, including our own, produce constantly. To appreciate its importance, you need to understand a process called methylation (chart). It's a simple transaction in which one molecule donates a four-atom appendage, a so-called methyl group to a neighborin molecule. Both the donor and the recipient change shape in the process, and the transformations can have far-reaching effects. Methylation occurs a billion times a second throughout the body, affecting everything from fetal development to brain function. It regulates the expression of genes. It preserves the fatty membranes that insulate our cells. And it helps regulate the action of various hormones and neurotransmitters, including serotonin, melatonin, dopamine and adrenaline. As biochemist Craig Cooney observes in his new book, "Methyl Magic," "Without methylation there could be no life as we know it. -- Newsweek magazine, July 5th, 1999

By A Customer Old vitamins get a breath of fresh air in this compelling book on nutrition. If you need to be motivated to eat right and take vitamins, this will do it. It presents the B-vitamins and more in a newly publicized theory called methylation. Bill Lawren has managed to move from the "feel good" stuff of the "Zone" (Barry Sears) to the science of "Methyl Magic" (Craig Cooney) without losing a beat. The new diagnostic tests to verify the results of the program are a very nice touch. The only criticism is with the title: Considering that Dr. Cooney lays out how methylation acts -- it hardly seems magical by the end of the book! In the end, however, Dr. Cooney documents many studies which show that his program is destined to reduce the incidence of all the major killers.. I just don't know why this is not major news. 12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A straightforward biology class for the masses! By A Customer Dr. Cooney has written a book covering in-depth human physiology in a manner that is easy to read and understand by the average person. While some may think Cooney's information is a rehash of current nutritional thinking, it is another side of the perspective to healthy living. In essence, it dovetails nicely with what the other "experts" are saying. Cooney's perspective brings forth the operational aspect of exactly what is happening inside the human body in a down to earth way. It's a sort of biology class for the masses that not only makes sense, but helps everyone to make lifestyle choices that can benefit everyone from day one. 12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A must read for the health enthusiast By Fred Madsen, PhD. (dmadsen@midwest.net) I commend Dr. Cooney for taking the time to inform the public about how important optimum methylation is to our everyday well-being and how it affects our general aging process. He has succeeded in explaining a rather complicated biochemical process in understandable terms. Many people are aware of the dangers of high plasma homocysteine, but few people outside of academia have been exposed to the other metabolic problems poor methylation creates. I have been practicing commercial animal nutrition for nearly 20 years and have been aware of the power diets formulated for optimum methylation have on general animal health and well-being. As a former librarian, I have always used the PDR for any drug reference questions I had. Complete with a Manufacturers' Index, Product Name Index, Product Catagory Index, Active Ingredients Index and Companion Drug Index, it allows the user to easily find needed information about any OTC drugs they may take or want to try. It also contains a Product Identification Guide with full-color illustrations, non-prescription drug information, dietary, herbal supplement and generic drug information and product comparison tables that let the user compare the active ingredients and dosages of common brand-name OTC drugs. This is a valuable resource for anyone in the medical field and for those who want to have more information they can discuss with their physician. Remember to always discuss any drug with your physician before using any supplements or OTC drugs; especially if you are on prescription medication. Drug interactions can sometimes be fatal when mixed. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Discusses many obscure seldom used herbals By Steven Sponaugle This book fails to discuss many herbals commonly used by complementary physicians and discusses many obscure herbals, seldom used in the United States, which would be difficult to find, even in the largest health food stores. It does contain excellent information describing many little known uses of ginkgo, garlic, berberine and other popular herbals, while containing almost no information concerning many other commonly used herbals. The Editors need to survey sales of herbals in the United States and re-examine which herbals they discuss, in this book. I believe most practitioners and laymen would prefer more detailed information concerning the 100 most popular herbals in the United States, not information about 200 herbs which probably do not comprise over 2 percent of herbal purchases, nationwide. Of course, my figures are estimates. Perhaps these obscure herbals are popular in China. Physicians need to be able to check side effects and interactions of herbals patients actually use. Information on weight loss herbals appears to be lacking, and weight loss herbals would obviously be a popular topic. Detailed discussions of Irvingia, Hoodia, Cambogia Garcinia, Banaba and Gymnema Sylvestre should be provided. Some Hoodia studies were discussed and referenced, but Banaba is not mentioned, nor is corosolic acid. Dosages and extracts actually used are also ignored. Examples include deglycrrizinated licorice, DGL, and 85 % 3 N butylphthalide celery seed extracts. The contents list appears very dated. I recommend the German Commission E Monographs, as a first reference, since it discusses herbals which are actually being used, in Europe and the United States. By A Customer Dr Elrod, is a down to earth and gets to the root of this frustrating depressing disease. His belief that there is real help, not just masking the "Flare-Ups" with drugs made me pick this book up in the first place. I was in the middle of a "No SLEEP" cycle, in pain and so depressed I felt hopeless. Following his advice on "Returning to Restful Sleep" I saw major improvement in the first night and by the third night was really SLEEPING! With this long sought after rest I got up feeling alot less pain and have been able to take almost no pain medication. Best of all an improved mental state, knowing that I'm finally on the right track. With Dr. Elrods book in hand I can improve my life and return to the healthy, active life I once had. I have read a "bunch" of books on this subject and felt it just might be hopeless, that I could ever enjoy life again. This book is easy to understand and with clear directions on accomplishing better health, he's lets one know it didn't happen overnight and won't be heal that fast either. NO magic pill, it takes our active particpation! But hope is here! 33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. If you really want to feel better, this is the one. By A Customer Dr. Elrod has written an invaluable tool for those who are determined to conquer fibromyalgia and get on with life. His manner of delivery is superb -- easy to understand, accurate, practical, and compassionate. There are many books about fibromyalgia on the market, but, unfortunately, most of them dwell on how rough it can be and leave you to wait for your next flare. Dr. Elrod takes the bull by the horns and puts you back in control. Get on with life -- apply the advice in this book, and you'll be amazed. 43 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely Wonderful!!!!!!! By hope_endures I have had fibromyalgia for many years but no one could diagnose it until now. But the physician put me on many medications such as anti-inflammatories, 2 antidepressants, which knocked me out for 2 days at a time, and pain pills. The pain continued and I only felt disconnected. Getting out of bed was a major task due to pain and a drug-induced state. I recently 2 months ago saw this book and had some hope. I immediately went to GNC the next day with my husband and bought everything Dr. Elrod suggested. At first I thought, "How am I going to take all of this stuff". But I divided it up in 4 doses a day and within 3 days I was sleeping all night and my pain was almost completely gone. I had the stiffness due to lack of exercise, due to extreme pain. But now I am doing stretching exercises and walking and I feel better and better each day. I have incorporated eating more nutritious meals and not only do I feel excellent, but my mind is sharper (because it is not focused on pain and exhaustion) and I have more energy and not to mention, my complexion is 100% better. I look healthy again!!! I am back to doing the things I enjoy like working out in the yard. My husband is thrilled because he gradually saw the life completely "zapped" out of me and has now returned. Words can not express how grateful I am for this book. Thank you Dr. Elrod!!!!!!!! Herbal Therapy and Supplements: A Scientific and Traditional Approach

This unique, portable clinical reference provides easily-accessible and clinically relevant monographs of herbs, spices, and aromatherapy oils for use by health care providers. The monographs, similar to those presented in nurses' drug handbooks, contain information on the health risks of taking these substances with over-the-counter and prescription drugs, a behavior that is increasing among the general public. Assessment guidelines help providers monitor side effects, toxicity, and drug-herb/drug-spice interaction. Specifics of monographs include action, current use, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, contraindications, side effects, long term safety, use in pregnancy/lactation and use for children. Appendices provide drug-herb interaction tables, contraindicated herbs, a listing of 'do not take together' herbs, and a listing by use/indication. Each monograph includes line drawings of each herb, and extensive reference and research listings.

I have met David Winston and find him to be a brilliant researcher, writer, and speaker. Any doctor's office or nurse will find this book helpful to answer patient's and their own questions about herbal medicine and it's place along side allopathic care. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent research, study, and reference guide... By Michael L. Sox I have not had the pleasure of meeting Merrily Kuhn, but I have met David Winston on a few occasions and will say that this book is a treasure. Concise, but detailed it contains explanations and information on current use, traditional use, nutritional ingredients, bio-chemical constituents, dosage and administration, preparation, toxicity, contraindications, side effects, long-term safety, pregnancy/childhood risk, special notes, and references for most herbs and nutrients in use today. It does assume a knowledge of bio-chemistry for constituents, but it is not necessary to use since every constituents is listed with its action if known. I would consider this a necessary addition to any herbal/nutritional/naturopathic study program as it has been a valuable aid in my own understanding and study for my Doctorate in Naturopathy. This book gives a simple, but solid foundation (especially with the bibliography) that can help to give scientific roots to the wonderful healing art of herbalism and deepen anyone's knowledge who wishes to further their study of herbs. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Review Mah Hussain-Gambles, University of Leeds, July 2004"This covenient, pocket-sized handbook provides an ideal tool for quickly gauging the clinical evidence behind a wide range of natural therapies, and enables a rapid assessment of the strength and validity of such evidence. It focuses on the issues most relevant to actual clinical practice, safety and identification of the natural products patients may be using."James Barlow, Irish Pharmacy Journal, January 2005"The fact that it lists both US and European formulations that have undergone clinical testing is an additional useful and practice feature. In summary, this text is in fact a comprehensive summary of available herbs and supplements."

Cassell About a year ago I bought this book & I can honestly say it's one of my most used books. It's very scientific & yet you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what it is saying. The first part of the book deals with different disorders such as ADHD, Diabetes, Hepatitis, Arthritis, & much more. Under the different disorders it gives different examples of what people have tried to treat them with. Then it proceeds to different scientific tests that either proves or disproves the treatment. The second part of the book deals with herbs & their therapeutic uses. Again here different uses & tests are provided for each herb. This book also discussed dosage recommendations, safety issues, drug interactions, & great references to other material. Overall this is a very useful book. The copy that I purchased contains over 1,000 pages & it covers everything from migraine headaches to the various vitamins. I recommend this book not only to the med student but to the average person just wanting useful & real information about herbs and their therapeutic uses. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Useful Herb book in a Traditional Medical Office By Michael L. Loren This book is a useful tool for traditional physicians. Many of our patients are wondering what else is there to use without using "medicine". The book rates various alternative therapies as 3+ evidence based, vs 0 or -1 as no evidence based. There is also some info on toxicity and drug reactions. The book has individual sections on various medical conditions such as Hepatitis and what alternatives are available with the rating system. There is also specific info on the products including dosage, and route of administration. This books seems more user friendly compared to the PDR version on herbals. See all 2 customer reviews...
