Naturopathic Nutrition: A Guide to Nutrient-Rich Food & Nutritional Supplements for Optimum Health

From two leading authorities in naturopathic clinical nutrition comes this consumer-health and patient-care book, diagnosing the dangers of our modern low-fibre and high-carbohydrate diet, while prescribing an optimum diet of nutrient-rich food and supplements for better health. The authors identify the nutritional deficiencies and dependencies caused by our 'junk-food' diet that lead to malnutrition and other serious dietary diseases and disorders. They recommend a diet that is whole, alive, fresh, and varied, rather than processed, dead, stale, and monotonous. For individuals with nutrient deficiencies and dependencies, they recommend appropriate vitamin, mineral, essential fatty acid, and amino acid therapy. The book features a 12-step program for developing an individualised diet and a 30-page analysis of the nutrient content of common foods. This collaboration between Dr Abram Hoffer (MD) and Dr Jonathan Prousky (ND) offers a unique complementary and alternative approach to good nutrition.

By AE I picked this book up at the library thinking I might have a skim or two over it, but found it so interesting I've actually read it cover to cover. The authors write in clear tone and voice, simple language, and break each chapter up into multiple sections. I do plan on buying it now, and I think it will be very handy for reference. Some of the information presented can be a bit redundant, but in general this is an excellent introduction to the nutrition from a naturopathic perspective, and indeed the naturopathic movement as a whole (since it is so focused on preventative care). There are many specific examples in each chapter of patients', whom either of the authors have seen, experiences.I didn't pick this book up to diagnose myself of any condition, or to treat anything in particular, but I have taken the advice of the book and implemented a few changes to my diet and supplementation habits. I am already a very clean eater, and a believer in naturopathic medicine, yet I found plenty of things I need to work on. I am now taking a B complex vitamin daily, and have seen my energy increase and my appetite decrease. I have also started taking ECPO (enteric coated peppermint oil) after eating large meals or potentially problematic foods, and have had good experiences so far with that.Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to make some changes to their own eating patterns, or anyone who is looking to broaden their knowledge of the naturpathic movement. Natural Flavonoids as Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss and Healing of Obesity Related Diseases (Journal of Personalized and Systems Medicine)

Obesity is closely associated with other diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and cancers. Natural flavonoids are promising dietary supplements for weight loss and treatment of obesity-related diseases, as they have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anticancer activities. These products are beneficial for weight loss and healing diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and renal diseases. They can decrease blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risks in overweight men and postmenopausal women. Certain processing methods and the combination with other interventions can make them more effective. Most of the flavonoids are extracted from natural herbs. It is necessary to know which parts to use and how to process these herbal products to have the best effects for the purposes of weight loss and healing relevant diseases. Certain combination of bioactive components, and certain diet patterns can have continued effects on weight loss. Excerpts: “… are known to be beneficial for healing diabetes in some animal models of obesity and metabolic syndrome…. Comprehensive By Maria I've got the third edition, and with over five million copies sold, this book is one of the most read texts on nutritional health. I say "text" because it measures in at a good inch and three-quarters thick. Written by a certified nutritionist and a bona-fide MD, it is neatly divided up into three parts.Part I, a quarter-inch thick discusses the basic principles of health and nutrition. This section lists and explains the various kinds of nutrients and food supplements.Part II, by far the biggest section of the book measuring in at an inch and a quarter, provides the reader with an A-Z listing of many common disorders (such as backache or diabetes) and what you can do about them from a nutritional point of view. The book ends with Part III, the last quarter-inch of the book, which is devoted to traditional therapies and conventional treatments that can be used along with a nutritional support. Here you'll find info on treatments such as chiropractic, massage therapy, color therapy, and so on.I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the amount of info contained in this book and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good nutritional reference book to put on their shelf when questions arise. Additionally, is also might give readers ideas of other types of therapies they could try for various medical problems. Other health titles I can recommend also include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for people who have trouble with chronic plantar fasciitis. 387 of 461 people found the following review helpful. time to wake up... By S. Castellano there is a ton of information in this book about remedies for various ailments, which is why i was tempted to keep it. however, every time i turned a page, i stumbled on more outdated, cringe-inducing, food-pyramid-era misinformation, such as, saturated fats like coconut oil increase your risk of heart attack, and you should have corn oil or canola oil instead. (seriously?!) it doesn't recommend sucralose (splenda), but says it's "metabolically inert" and would work well for diabetics. no mention of the fact that this stuff was originally meant to be a pesticide. oh, and go ahead and eat that plastic "food" -- margarine in a tub -- because we wouldn't want to get fat on butter...and while you're at it, stock up on low-fat dairy products (made by those nice food manufacturers), which have had all the nutrients sucked out of them. if the author had taken the time to look into the latest nutritional research, she would realize all of this "common knowledge" was basically propaganda that is now being debunked. coconut oil, for example, is one of the best foods you can give your body, but the corn oil industry was responsible for vilifying it to beef up their own profits. all the research is out there, but despite the fact that this is the "updated" 2010 edition, you're not going to get anything cutting-edge here. expect more of the same old regurgitated B.S. we've been fed for the past several decades, information that has served to make us a nation of fat, sick, misinformed people. a book that presents itself as the gold standard of nutritional healing can't get up to speed with information i can find in a simple google search? that's either laziness, or more propaganda. either way, i rate that a fail. 19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. What is mostly lacking is a critical eye to what's included--you get the sense that in order to reach his 150 item quota, the author's included a lot of dubious treatments and approaches without researching them very carefully (e.g., weight lifting supplements that have been shown to have serious side effectss (even the guys on "t-nation" stopped taking them), hormone replacement for men, the "subluxation" concept that used to be prevalent in chiropractic medicine, but has been abandoned by most ethical chiropracters). And while the breezy writing style is still sometimes fun, there's a bit too much name dropping (and promotion of friends' businesses). Overall, what comes through is a rushed effort to crank out another best-seller. 15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The Human Energy Bible! By Julio Punch To go through life full of energy, with an optimistic mindset is something we all want. This book by Dr Jonny Bowden gives you 150 strategies to get more energy into your life. I enjoyed several of Bowden's other books because they are well written, in language you and I can understand, he makes clear why certain foods, supplements, etc will or will not work for you. This certainly applies to this book. Above all his books are fun to read because he has a nice sense of humour. The book is printed on durable paper, has some nice illustrations and an excellent lay-out.The strategies included in the book include foods and supplements you can take, this information takes up about half of the book. There are shorter sections about exercise, improving your sleep, organizing your living space and how to detoxify your body. Most of the information has a basis in science, with some small excursions into subjects like acupuncture and Feng Shui. All in all this is an excellent and up-to-date guide for anyone interested in health and fitness. 9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The Natural Testosterone Plan: For Sexual Health and Energy

How to maintain optimum testosterone levels for the male body through the use of herbs, nutritional supplements, and diet • Explains the phenomenon of andropause--male menopause--and how to deal with it • Reveals scientific evidence of testosterone-blocking agents in the environment that alter men’s essential chemistry as they age • Presents safe, organic plant medicines that can restore optimum testosterone levels • Contains the most up-to-date natural treatments for impotence, infertility, and prostate disease The recognition of the middle-age stage in male development of andropause, which is comparable to women’s menopause, is hampered by the lack of a clear understanding of the chemistry and physiology specific to aging men. Men are still capable of reproduction well into and beyond middle age. Yet a man’s sexual desire and potency varies, often according to his testosterone level. Recent studies show that the lowered testosterone levels endemic in aging men--the gradual drop that is quite normal--is being exacerbated by environmental agents. Testosterone-blocking estrogen agents are present in insecticides, industrial materials, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Men are daily inundated with a “cocktail” of estrogen agents that alter the fine balance of testosterone that makes them male. In The Natural Testosterone Plan, Stephen Harrod Buhner shows why men need help to maintain their testosterone levels as they age and explains how safe, naturally occurring phytoandrogens--plant medicines that contain male hormones--can remedy the depletion exerted by the environment. Buhner details how each phytoandrogen works, when its use is indicated, and the most appropriate method of application.

Review “Stephen Buhner combines scientific research, traditional knowledge, and personal experience into what may be one of the most important books available on men’s health today. " (The American Herb Association, Vol. 22:3, Sept 2007  )"This book is very educational, informative, and well-organized. EXCELLENT LONGEVITY HANDBOOK By Pieter The science of longevity & anti-ageing medicine are making such rapid strides that this book, published in 1996, might not be on the cutting edge as far as the latest nutrient research is concerned. However it still deserves 5 stars for its in-depth treatment of all the major issues and nutrient discoveries up to 1996 and for its readable style.Klatz and Goldman deal with theories of aging, the natural hormones (melatonin, DHEA, hGH etc.), the miracle minerals and vital anti-oxidants, exercise, nutrition and how to handle stress. It's important to note that an anti-aging lifestyle is not only designed to extend one's life, but also to ensure a healthy, happy and quality existence at any age.The chapter on the pioneers of anti-aging medicine and their personal secrets of longevity are particularly interesting and informative. The exercise section is very well illustrated and there are a couple of other graphs and figures to illumine the text. The book contains a glossary, appendices on anti-aging specialists, institutes, research and educational organizations, an extensive bibliography and a thorough index.I would also like to recommend "The Superhormone Promise" by William Regelson and "Renewal" by Timothy J. Smith. These three books together will make you an anti-aging expert. Just remember to apply this good advice! 15 of 19 people found the following review helpful. A comprehensive simplified guide to staying young By A Customer While simplistic and less then scientific at times, this book gives a good coverage to the new rising anti aging supplements. The book is a good start up point for the reader to extend their personal research from. The text as said is less then scientific but then again what percentage of the readership would be able to follow it if it was. As common ground text goes this is quite a good one, giving you food for thought and some general understanding. 13 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Use it or Lose it! Fills an Important Need By A Customer There are many books about sports nutrition, but very few that focus specifically on nutrition during exercise. In fact, to my knowledge there were none until this one came along. The Performance Zone, written by exercise physiologist John Ivy, Ph.D., and biochemist Robert Portman, Ph.D., fills a major informational void by providing athletes in all sports with detailed guidelines for fueling their bodies during training and competition. The authors define "the performance zone" as a time interval that begins 30 minutes before exercise and ends 15 minutes after exercise. "Science clearly shows that the right combination of fluid and nutrients consumed within the Performance Zone will help you improve your athletic performance far more than the latest high-tech equipment or training device," they write. Ivy and Portman poured through hundreds of published research studies to determine exactly what and how much athletes should consume within this time period and on what kind of schedule. Before they get to the practical recommendations, which make up the bulk of the book, the authors provide some interesting background on what happens inside the body during exercise and how "nutritional intervention" can help athletes prepare their body for activity, achieve optimal performance during the workout or competition, and recover quickly and thoroughly afterward. Not surprisingly, Ivy and Portman conclude that a well-formulated sports drink is far superior to water or any other "natural" food or drink for use immediately before and during exercise. In Chapter 6, they attack the myth that all sports drinks are the same, pointing to significant differences in the formulations of various popular brands and explaining what they feel - based on the available science - is the ideal formulation. The most useful part of The Performance Zone, Chapter 6 also shows how a simple calculation can show athletes exactly how much sports drink to consume based on their individual weight and activity. Endurance athletes in particular will find this calculation helpful, I believe. Triathletes and other endurance athletes are always struggling to find the right balance of fluid and carbohydrate intake. Ivy and Portman make the simple point - which, amazingly, I had never before read or heard anywhere else - that water loss and carbohydrate burning almost always occur in a fixed proportion during exercise: about 4.5 ounces per 100 calories. Nuggets like this really take the guesswork out of creating the proper fueling schedule. The subject of post-exercise nutrition receives a similar treatment. The authors weigh the advantages and disadvantages of various recovery nutrition strategies ranging from "real food" to powdered drink mixes. Another simple formula allows athletes to calculate exactly how much water, carbohydrate, and protein they should consume within the post-exercise segment of the performance zone.Nutritional needs and challenges and fueling opportunities vary from sport to sport. Understanding this fact, Ivy and Portman include a chapter in which a cavalcade of well-known professional athletes and coaches provide tips specific to each of a dozen sports. Among the contributors are mountain biking world champion Alison Dunlap and running coach Jeff Galloway. Parents and coaches of young athletes will probably get a lot out of this chapter. The final chapter, which discusses the drawbacks and dangers of a wide range of nutritional supplements and performance enhancing drugs, should be required reading for this audience, and for young athletes themselves. All in all, The Performance Zone is an excellent resource with great practical value for athletes in all sports. As the authors point out in the book's first chapter, most athletes simply are not doing what the latest science suggests they out to be doing in terms of fueling their
