Gant Vindicated By Maureen Meccio RE: CHARLES GANT, MD The website of the NYS Office of Professional Medical Conduct begins its report of the Charles Gant case by listing a series of charges brought against him in highly inflammatory and misleading language. Only if you really like reading long text on computer screens would you ever get to the part where it is revealed that the charges relating to the quality of his medical care have been overturned by a OPMC hearing panel. In fact, the hearing panel upheld Dr. Gant's methodology, which relies heavily on using nutritional supplements to treat many conditions by rebalancing biochemistry, most notably, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) in children. Further, they found that, contrary to the charges, Dr. Gant had done no harm to any of his patients: "The committee unanimously agreed that the Respondent's license should not be revoked. The record in this case established Respondent was not incompetent nor did his conduct amount to gross negligence. Nor did they find that his diagnostic or testing practices were an attempt to reap excessive financial gain. He was well versed in his type of practice and was not trying to take advantage of his patients. In mitigation of the findings of fraud, the committee notes that the use of erroneous codes was not done for the Respondent's financial benefit since his practice was one of fee for service." Now you can really understand substance abuse By A Customer This book describes, in lay terms, a growing sub-specialty within addictions treatment that is based on nutritional medicine. It's a treatment protocol that is becoming more popular -- because people are realizing how effective it can be. Plus it's based solidly on science: published medical research documenting the interrelationship between brain chemistry, nutrition and substance use.Read this book to learn why you crave nicotine, alcohol or drugs (it's because of how they affect your brain chemistry). The book also provides questionnaires to help you figure out what nutrients you can use to get yourself back into balance. Many people Dr. Gant have treated (he's been doing this for 15 years) have "quit" without even trying -- I mean, imagine being able to stop smoking, as one example, without any withdrawal symptoms at all!I've known Dr. Gant personally for years, and as many others who know him would agree, his work could help so many people! If you have a cigarette, booze or drug habit, or love someone who uses drugs, please try this book! 20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Changed My Life!! By G. M. The approach is something most doctors overlook...our nutrition and how it affects our feelings, neurotransmitters and over all health. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I learned a lot but this book alone is not enough to end your addiction By J. Balao I've been addicted to anime/manga/alcohol/pornography for so many years. Though, this book help me in some level, it didn't help me so much on reducing my cravings in a long term. I'm still far from being cured but my addiction improved when I read the Alcoholism and Addiction Cure by Chris Prentiss. I combine it with the things I learned from Charles Gant's book. I notice that my cravings will be severe based on my "state of mind." Even if I'm taking large doses of amino acid I learned from this book, my cravings is still VERY strong based on my emotional state. It happens on time whenever I got traumatic events, wrong mindset and beliefs, something like that. So, basically I learned that I could control my addiction the most if I have the right mindset. (which I learned from Chris Prentiss books)Respects, John 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Works, really. By Valerie Foley I have only a rudimentary understanding of the chemistry behind the theories here, but the text is written in easily understood language and makes sense. Most importantly, it works. Author is honest about timelines, withdrawal, etc. When you read something that promises an almost instant benefit, you're naturally skeptical, but the supplements suggested work immediately. You can feel a difference in mood, energy level, and optimism right away. You really can use this program to kick your cigarette, alcohol, drug, or carb addiction. See all 12 customer reviews...

Nutritional Supplements and the Competitive Edge: Why Creatine? There are many reasons why creatine has emerged as the clear winner in the sports nutritional supplement arena. Creatine has been shown to:* increase muscle mass (size) * boost muscle strength * possibly speed the rate of muscle growth * possibly prevent breakdown of muscle tissue * help the body lose fat and replace it with lean muscle * increase the body's production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel used for fast bursts of activity * shorten recovery time during activities (such as between reps) and between workouts * possibly delay muscle fatigue * permit longer and more intense workouts * improve athletic performance, especially when short bursts of strength are required, as in power lifting, bodybuilding, wrestling, sprinting, martial arts, football, baseball, hockey, javelin, discus, shot put, hammer throwing, and other sports * possibly elevate levels of HDL (the good kind of) cholesterol * help improve body image * possibly increase motivation to train hard * as of this writing, be safe, for short-term use, with few side effects * possibly have benefits in treating certain medical conditions, including Lou Gehrig's disease, congestive heart failure, recovery from surgery, AIDS-related muscular wasting, and loss of muscular strength in the elderly * help in about 80 percent of the people who try itOn the downside you should note that creatine:* should not be used by people with kidney problems * may not help endurance athletes in such sports as long-distance running or swimming, and may even be a negative factor, since its use can result in weight gain * may have side effects such as cramping, nausea, and diarrhea in some people who use it * may cause dehydration by drawing water into the muscle cells * may have no noticeable effect on sports performance for some people, possibly those who already have high levels of creatine in their muscles * may do little or nothing unless you exercise on a regular basis while taking it * may be dangerous if taken in larger-than-recommended doses * has no long-term studies to prove there are no adverse side effects when used over a period of yearsTHE SEARCH FOR A BOOSTWe've all seen them. People wandering around health-food stores, picking up one product after another, reading labels and considering: will this work for me or not? They talk to the clerks, compare ingredients, and try to choose the right supplement, the one that will be worth the money and make a difference in their performance, make them stronger and more energetic.Chances are, you've done this yourself, so you know the feeling. It's confusing. And frustrating. There are so many products, so many different manufacturers, such a variety of formulas. One promises "high energy," another says it will "fuel muscles," while yet another claims their product will "enable the muscles to work at greater intensity."How can you know if these claims are true? Do you need to be a chemist or physician or nutritionist to be able to figure it out? And are there any governmental safeguards, or can these manufacturers just make any claim they want to? These are some of the things you should know before buying. If you walk into a health-food store today, things look very different from a few years ago. Now, instead of row after row of vitamin and mineral bottles, chances are the first thing you'll see as you come in the door is a big selection of creatine products.Creatine seems to be everywhere. The figure of $200 million in annual sales makes a pretty important statement. People want this stuff and they're willing to pay for it. Thirty, forty, even fifty dollars a month and sometimes more. Is it really worth it?SUPPLEMENT REGULATIONSWe all know that prescription medications are carefully regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and drug manufacturers spend millions of dollars researching their products to prove they are safe and effective, so they can gain FDA approval and sell them to the public. In fact, recent statistics indicate that some drug manufacturers spend up to $500 million on developing a single drug. But what about nutritional supplements?Manufacturers of dietary supplements have an estimated annual revenue of $11.5 billion dollars. It seems like just about everyone takes at least one multivitamin per day, and millions of people take a whole menu of products, including individual vitamin and mineral pills, herbal remedies, and protein supplements. But since these supplements are neither drugs nor food, the FDA has no power to regulate them. For years a great battle has been waged between the government and the public over the question of regulations. Health-food advocates claim it is their right to take any nutritional supplements they want and the government has no business interfering. "We can self-regulate," they argue, "and we don't want the government telling us what we can and can't take for our health." Government officials counter that there must be strict controls if the public safety is to be assured. The Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 grew out of this debate. It allows manufacturers to produce and sell nutritional supplements, provided they are not considered drugs by the FDA and companies make no health or medical claims for their products. Creatine, andro, and all the other supplements you buy in the health-food store come under this act. In addition, these nutritional supplements do not have to be clinically tested for effectiveness or safety. However, there are exceptions. If the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) finds that a producer is using misleading advertising or making claims it cannot substantiate, this government agency can take legal action against the manufacturer in order to protect the public. In addition, the FDA can take action against supplement manufacturers whose products cause serious health risks to their users. This was the case in 1989, when the amino acid supplement L-tryptophan caused about thirty-eight deaths, apparently due to accidental contamination in a Japanese factory. As a result the FDA banned tryptophan for sale in this country. So despite the power of these agencies, at this time there is really very little government control over the content of dietary supplements. Quality can widely vary from product to product, and the motto is "buyer beware."However, there is some hope on the horizon for the consumer. In a regulation that went into effect in early 1999, the FDA now requires manufacturers of dietary supplements to provide more complete information on their labels.Specifically, they must include a complete list of all ingredients and the precise levels of every vitamin, mineral, herb, or other substance in the product, similar to what is provided for most food items in the supermarket. With this new "supplement facts" label, people who buy creatine and other supplements will have a better chance to judge each product and make an informed decision about what to buy. They will be able to see, quickly and easily, exactly what ingredients the product contains and in what amounts. As a result, comparison shopping should be much less confusing.THE PURSUIT OF VICTORYLet's face it. There's nothing like winning. In a split second you feel an intoxicating rush unlike anything else you will ever know. The quest for this singular thrill is what motivates many athletes around the world. Whether you're a twelve-year-old figure skater getting up at five in the morning to train for the Olympics, a basketball player shooting hoops all weekend, or a runner snatching a few extra laps in the cold winter dark after work, you are willing to go the extra mile, push your body to the limit, in fact, do almost anything just to gain that infinitesimal competitive edge that can be the difference between second place and first. Between almost making it and breaking a record. Between winning and losing.Throughout history athletes have trained to perfect their bodies and their performance, running, jumping, lifting weights, whether at home alone, on school teams, in neighborhood playgrounds, in gyms, or in professional sports. And until recently the ingredients that made up a good athlete were pretty simple: natural ability, hard work, good health, and the will to succeed. But now the formula has changed. There's been a significant addition, a new factor that can actually alter the balance: supplements.Everyone's doing it, right? Before you join the crowds take a moment to inform yourself. Or if you're already taking supplements, do yourself a favor and find out more about them. And above all, do not take any supplements, no matter how safe you may think they are, without a doctor's approval and supervision. In today's world you have to be alert. You have to be smart. You have to know what you're doing. As the saying goes, you've got to look out for number one-it's not such bad advice. So if you're just starting an exercise program for the first time, or if you want to maintain and enhance your regular fitness program, or if you're a serious athlete and want to dramatically improve your performance, you should know more about creatine. It could be the answer to your prayers.

Micronutrients in Health and Disease

Increased oxidative stress due to the production of excessive amounts of free radicals along with the effects of chronic inflammation play a major role in the initiation and progression of a host of disease states, ranging from cancer to posttraumatic stress disorder. In varying doses, micronutrients, including antioxidants, B vitamins, and minerals have shown to help ameliorate these effects. However, clinical studies using isolated micronutrients to combat these illnesses have proven that such limited therapy has produced inconsistent results. Assembling a plethora of rational and scientific evidence, Micronutrients in Health and Disease makes the case that the use of not one but multiple micronutrients working together synergistically in combination with a low-fat, high-fiber diet can prove successful in the prevention and management of these chronic conditions. Following an overview of basic facts about micronutrients, oxidative stress, inflammation, the immune system, and the results of various clinical studies, the book explores the use of micronutrients in prevention and improvement of standard therapy in a number of disease states, including: Coronary artery disease Diabetes Cancer Alzheimer’s disease Parkinson’s disease Hearing disorders Posttraumatic stress disorder Traumatic brain injury HIV/AIDS Adverse effects of radiation Arthritis Steeped in research and heavily referenced, this volume concludes with a list of common myths and misconceptions about micronutrient use and a chart with dietary reference intakes (DRIs) of all the major products, making this a solid resource for those seeking to promote healthy aging and prevent and manage disease.

Amazon.com Review Depressed, overworked, or just feelin' old are common enough complaints. But when disparate symptoms such as joint pain, weight gain, and foggy-headedness join the ranks, it's time to think thyroid. As the "throttle" for the body's energy hormones, the thyroid affects every organ and cell; when it's in trouble, any variety of ailments--physical and mental--can occur. Trouble is, physicians are more likely to treat each symptom independently, with pill upon pill, rather than search for a root cause. Bolstered by 25 years of treating patients with low thyroid condition, husband-and-wife team Richard L. Shames, M.D., and Karilee H. Shames, R.N., Ph.D., ably explain the physical and emotional profiles of those diagnosed with the disease, why the proverbial deck is stacked against them, and how each patient can forge an effective path of treatment. "Consider Thyroid Power a long, personal visit with a caring, prevention-oriented practitioner," state the authors. The journey begins with thyroid basics: how this little hormone-producing tissue operates, signs that things are amiss, how other illnesses compound the problem, and how to determine one's risk for hypothyroidism. Next, the Shameses discuss the labyrinth of diagnostic and treatment issues a patient must endure. Helpful and harmful supplements and environmental factors, repairing the immune system (the origin of thyroid troubles), and a rich, sensitive exploration of holistic healing nicely round out this valuable resource. A brief section titled "Show This to Your Doctor," penned by Richard, perfectly crystallizes the book and provides an effective tool for initiating a patient/physician dialogue. --Liane Thomas From Library Journal Richard Shames, a physician, and his wife, Karilee, a Ph.D.-prepared registered nurse, have written "a step-by-step approach to healing low thyroid," a condition they feel affects far more people than is generally recognized. In ten steps, the authors outline the different kinds of thyroid disease, its manifestations, how it can be diagnosed, and the variety of ways it can be treated. The style is very readable and includes Karilee's personal account of dealing with low thyroid. A number of appendixes (though they are not so named) collect information on topics discussed throughout the book a glossary of terms, resources, the kinds of tests, etc. The authors refer to numerous studies and other books that are included in both the notes for each chapter and in a "Further Reading" section. This book will complement other consumer health titles such as Ridha Arem's The Thyroid Solution (LJ 6/1/99) and Beth Ann Ditkoff and Paul Lo Gerfo's briefer The Thyroid Guide (HarperResource, 2000). This book could change your life By Alex Forman Dr.Richard Shames and his wife, Karilee, who is a skilled nurse, have written a book that has the potential to help millions of people feel better. As a practitioner of medicine working at the Preventive Medical Center in San Rafael, California, I have been using some of the philosophy and techniques that I learned directly from Dr. Shames to help many patients. These patients suffer from the most common symptoms such as: fatigue, depression, weight gain, insomnia, headaches, joint and muscle pain, memory loss, frequent colds and viruses, cold hands and feet etc. Previously I was at a loss to help these people and could only tell them that there was nothing "wrong" with them and that their problems were not "medical" at all. It turns out that I, along with most medical practitioners, were victims of our own dogma. In reality, when it comes to thyroid disorders, many people have so-called "normal" tests, and yet when given thyroid hormone, their quality of life improves dramatically. I am not speaking of a short term placebo response, that we see frequently with any healing intervention. Many of my patients get better and stay that way, simply from taking thyroid hormone that no "well trained" medical practitioner would dare give them, because their tests were "normal". Fortunately, with this book, the Shames family has broken that taboo and the genie is out of the bottle at last. This book is directed and designed for the health consumer and it will help to empower them to demand the treatments they are entitled to receive. It is organized as a step by step program to help the health consumer understand the nature of the problem they may be facing and what the potential solutions are. The reader is educated at each step and encouraged to take more control over their own health care. While many Physicians encourage the mystique of the "all knowing" omnipotent Doctor, the Shames's are completely committed to breaking down that power relationship in their work. This book goes a long way to making the health consumer a more equal partner. I was particularly glad to see the emphasis on women's health issues and the encouragement of women to ask for more assistance with the problems of mid-life that are so often simply dismissed as "oh well, that's menopause for you". Women have been the victim of a patriarchal health system for too long and this book is one of many that helps women patients get the medical care they are entitled to. The issue of thyroid dysfunction is brought down to earth in this book and the reader is given a wide range of options to try. Rather than simply accepting the divine judgment that "your thyroid is normal according to the tests", the patient has several choices, if her/his symptoms are interfering with their life. They can ask for more tests, as the simple basic thyroid tests do not necessarily have all the information needed. Particularly they can request that their thyroid antibodies be checked. I have seen many patients, who responded magnificently to thyroid medication, when their only abnormal result was high levels of these antibodies. Of course, conventional medical dogma denies this possibility and will only treat people who have a TSH level above 5. Even if all the tests are normal, this book encourages the patient to ask for a trial of thyroid hormone treatment. I can assure you that many people will improve with this simple intervention and there is no risk if one if carefully monitored. Finally, if the standard thyroid treatment fails to improve things, there are other types of thyroid hormones that might help, including the often ridiculed natural thyroid. Dr. Shames reports on many cases of people who responded far better to combinations of T4 and T3 hormone, rather than the standard T4 treatment alone. As with all who challenge the conventional dogma, I am

Adrenal Fatigue offers a revolutionary different approach saying that the main reason behind stress is the stress of the body's adrenal glands, two peanut-sized glands on top of each kidney, that are crucial for regulating the body's temperature, hormones, mood and energy. The book does not only offer a diagnosis but rather offers a complete lifestyle plan that is supposed to make the body relax and restore its energy. The suggested program is around three months long and includes changing one's diet by decreasing the intake of junk food and increasing that of organic food and vitamin supplements. The book is also strict on the importance of organizing eating and sleeping hours. Even though the book suggests an alternative lifestyle that might sound harsh to many, its insight is very relieving for stress sufferers and if those manage to implement half of the book's suggested plan, they would notice an improvement in their health, restoration in their energy and reduction in their stress levels. Even though in terms of style the book is sometimes needlessly long and in other times dry and written in a medical style, it offers self-tests as a means of diagnosis and these tests also determine the levels of stress among those who take them. So far, this is the most convincing, cohesive and well-designed books on stress that brings together alternative medicine, diet and other tips that would certainly help doing away with stress. 792 of 822 people found the following review helpful. Incredibly informative and reader-friendly book. By Jack Halstead, PhD This is an incredibly informative and reader-friendly book about a common debilitating medical condition that goes largely undiagnosed and untreated. ADRENAL FATIGUE: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome is a very empowering work cram-packed with vital information about a condition that very likely affects millions of people. Author Dr. James L. Wilson gives us both the bad news and the good news about this situation. The bad news is how this illness is devastating so many lives, how so many people are being left without hope, and why traditional (allopathic) medicine has failed to recognize or remedy this tragedy. The good news is that this condition can be diagnosed, can be treated, and that there is hope. And Wilson ought to know. With 3 doctorate and two masters degrees all from different disciplines (including Human Nutrition, Naturopathic Medicine, and Bio/Nutrition), Wilson lectures extensively to physicians and is an internationally acknowledged expert on alternative, holistic approaches to health. Supporting Wilsons claims about adrenal fatigue are his 25 years of clinical practice and a depth and breadth of research based on over 2400 scientific references. But dont be daunted by the academic and scientific pedigree of the author; this book is a very easy readdeceptively so for the quality and import of the material. The book opens with an overview of the function of the adrenals, and how they are prone to chronic fatigue given our hyper-stressed contemporary lifestyles. This is followed by a section on how to tell if you have adrenal fatigue, which includes a questionnaire, several simple at-home diagnostic tests that you can perform yourself, as well as thorough information on the availability (and usefulness) of different laboratory tests. The heart and soul of Wilsons book (and where you get a sense of this doctors caring bedside manner) is the lengthy section on the treatment of adrenal dysfunction, Helping Yourself Back to Health. This is the good news section. It includes detailed information and sage advice on multiple strategies for treatment, such as lifestyle, food, food allergies

Happy blending! 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. One of the best! By anonymouse I have been recommending the first edition of this book for years, as one of the best "beginners books" around. The new edition is even better since Ms. Wilson has added more essential oils, information on hydrosols...brought the book up to date with what is happening in the world of Aromatherapy in this decade. The book offers a great balance of information about a wide array of essential oils as well as recipes/formulas for their use in restoring wellbeing to both body and emotions. It is one of the best on the market today. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. By Nutrition Man Dr. Balch, the main author, missed a great opportunity to write an exceptional book that could help tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people live a healthier, happier and more rewarding life. The fact that he often leaves out his own advice given to readers of his newsletter is proof of this. The best example is the section regarding cholesterol reduction / cardiovascular health. He offers limited information on natural alternatives to prescription cholesterol-lowering drugs. He COMPLETELY left out perhaps the best natural alternative of all - Pantethine (a special form of vitamin B5 known as Pantothenic Acid). A while back, he talked about Pantethine in his newsletter, and how great and safe it is for lowering cholesterol / triglycerides. Yet in his book, this information is NOWHERE to be found!! I also found much information about newer, scientifically-advanced supplements was completely missing as well. As someone who has been involved in the nutritional supplement industry for 15 years, I am greatly disturbed by how incomplete this "up-to-date" book is. There are books published 10 years ago that are better than this "latest" work by Dr. Balch. Instead of wasting your $$$ on this book, I highly recommend "Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution" (Nature's Answer to Drugs) by Dr. Robert C. Atkins (available here on Amazon, and in Barnes & Noble stores) 16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Right Book At The Right Time! By Susan Stephens I stumbled upon this book by accident and am I ever glad that I did! I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia after a hip fracture and have been researching all the osteoporosis meds available ... and coming away horrified at their side effects. I was just about to take my chances with a "do nothing" form of treatment when I found this book. I am SO relieved and excited to find the really good information contained in this book on this particular subject and all the alternatives that are mentioned. I have two other books by James F. Balch and they are well worn from use. This one is definitely joining the others as a must have in my home library. After researching my own medical conditions, I looked up those of a few other family members ... found just as much information available ... and was able to share it with them. Do not hesitate to purchase this book ... it is a great tool ... especially for those of us in the Second Act (50 years and older!) that are finding themselves being diagnosed with various medical conditions after living very healthy lives. There are a lot of "age related" things that we are faced with every day and this book gives us a breath of fresh air from the usual prescription meds our MDs are so quick to put us all on! 13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Guides you through the maze of supplement bottles By LC I am open to supplements, but not ready to throw out traditional medicine just yet. And I'm overwhelmed by the 50-foot aisle of supplements at my grocery store. I see 37 different kinds of calcium alone and honestly, I give up. What's safe to take? Which manufacturers are trustworthy? Who knows? Well, this book guides you through natural supplements that can improve or heal many conditions (big ones like high cholesterol, everyday ones like eczema or even anxiety). It discusses the studies - serious, peer-reviewed studies - proving the value of these supplements. It even tells you how your prescription medications may be working, and how supplements can assist or replace them. For some things, I've decided a supplement that can help me, and felt like I knew which bottle of pills was worth my money. For other things, I've come away understanding why my prescription drugs work. With the price of vitamins and supplements these days, avoiding just one wasted purchase would probably cover the cost of this

A slim but vital compendium of practical and applicable information By Midwest Book Review Pain/Inflammation Matters: Recipes For Life by Gloria Gilbere (a doctor of naturopathy, and expert in natural health issues, and an experienced homeopath), is a slim but vital compendium of practical and applicable information on the prevention, and even reversal, of fibromyalgia, arthritis, heart disease and inflammatory disorders. Organized into thoroughly "reader friendly" sections: "Causes & Effects"; "Heart Matters"; "Nightshade-free Recipes; and Non-drug Pain & Inflammation Phyters, Pain/Inflammation Matters should be considered "must reading" by anyone (especially non-specialist general readers) who suffer from chronic pain or inflammation. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This Is The Book I Needed By Marcia Y This book is a great help in understanding the causes of my pain. Avoiding nightshades has brought me great relief and I've gone a step further by ordering Invisible Illnesses by the same author. The more that I learn the more relief I'm getting. I love the nightshades but no food is worth the agony that I suffered. I like the fact that the author is writing and informing from her own experience. See all 2 customer reviews...

Muscles, Speed, and Lies: What the Sport Supplement Industry Does Not Want Athletes or Consumers to Know

In 2005, health-conscious consumers and athletes combined spent approximately $6 billion on various sport supplements that promised to enhance their health, physical development, or performance. But do these supplements really offer the benefits they claim in their advertising and on their packaging? And are they safe?David Lightsey, MS, a nutrition and food science advisor to an award-winning consumer advocacy Web site, maintains that the sports supplement industry regularly and knowingly makes false claims, and since it has yet to be properly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, consumers are unprotected from products that are unnecessary, may cause great harm, or even lead to death. Aware that much of the problem stems from a lack of information about general nutrition, dietary supplements, and beneficial lifestyle changes, Lightsey provides answers to such questions as:

Bachman Anyone interested in physical fitness will soon encounter a dizzying array of competing, and sometimes contradictory, claims regarding optimal diets and supplements. Lightsey's book is a thoughtful and thoroughly documented guide through these claims. What he finds is that most of the claims made by supplement companies and diet gurus are either demonstrably false, or at least, have no reason to be believed. In fact, many of the lies he documents here are so outrageous as to be deeply disturbing. I read an interview in Fitness RX for Men a while ago with a big name UFC fighter, and I was surprised when he reported that he took absolutely no supplements. After reading Lightsey's book, I can see why. Bottom line is, this book is worth buying for anyone interested in fitness, especially trainers and athletes. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must read if you're into sports or care about your health By Ivan Tarasov This is book consists of two parts: the overview of credible scientific results on supplements and the way the supplement industry companies lie their way into your wallet, and the part containing overview of diets, research on sports nutrition, and some practical suggestions on how to balance one's food consumption to improve the health and sports fitness. The first part is really detailed, and provides examples of tricks, marketing lies, misrepresentation of the products, etc., used to lure the consumers into buying supplements they don't need, or in quantities much bigger than they need. Do you buy vitamins? Or protein powder, to increase muscle growth? Or some wonderful dieting pills? - Then read this book, you'll learn a lot. The second part is a bit more practical, and contains some good guidelines on how to structure your diet, especially if you're trying to lose weight, or trying to reach your peak sports form. Some of the common myths are debunked, several popular diets are analyzed (and some even showed to be dangerous, e.g. low-carbohydrate consumption diets). All the facts presented in the book are substantiated by research, you'll find a lot of references to the scientific papers. The author is really serious about presenting the correct facts about nutrition, to the best of current scientific knowledge. One minor annoyance: the first part of the book reads not like a book, more like an internet article. However that's just a personal reflection, and in no way does it diminish the quality of the content. See all 2 customer reviews...

For a neophyte, perhaps it could be rated as high as a "2". There aren't many supplements which Elrod didn't include in this review...EVERY supplement is important to him (and I don't disagree). However, one would have to take pills ALL DAY to get all his recommendations ingested. He doesn't give any ideas of relative importance, nor does he suggest any amount which might be necessary for each supplement. Not very helpful. 12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Worthwhile addition to the body of knowledge!! By Kathleen M. Pagan I have suffered with fibromyalgia and chronic fatique syndrome since 1992. When I was diagnosed there was virtually no information available! Thankfully there are some caring souls out there who have lent their expertise to this condition that is looked down on by so many professionals. As a stand-alone this pamphlet gives a fair background to the condition in addition to the invaluable information regarding the supplements but its strength lies in its addition to the cummulative body of information that is being built. Another reviewer mentioned that one would have to take pills all day in order to use all the suggested supplements..... from my reading of the pamphlet that was never intended! These are suggestions and each individual needs to find the right balance of supplements and in the quantity that works for that individual. If you are suffering from this condition my thoughts and prayers are with you! Don't give up and don't let people tell you this is all in your head!!! 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Maybe a little too basic By Sara Westhead Many FM patients (usually those with a more mild form) have found that they can manage their FM through the use of supplements. Elrod gives a lot of good suggestions, but not a lot of information on how the different supplements can help. This is a good resource book, but should be used in light of a doctor's care and current research. See all 5 customer reviews...

Misclassification of Smoking Habits and Passive Smoking: A Review of the Evidence (International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health. Supplement)

How accurate are statements about smoking habits? This book presents the results of a comprehensive review in which the literature on the subject is newly interpreted. It is shown that smokers are misclassified as non-smokers in epidemiological studies often enough to explain the increased lung cancer risk seen in self-reported non-smokers in relation to their spouse's smoking habits. This study overturns the commonly held view that increased risk is a consequence of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and highlights the difficulty of making valid inferences from epidemiological data. No-one should draw conclusions about passive smoking before reading this book!
