Amazon.com Review In 1994, Congress unanimously passed DSHEA, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, and the sale of supplements exploded into a multibillion-dollar business. Today the market is filled with supplements for everything from promoting weight loss to enhancing one's sex life. So how do you make sense of the multitude of pills, capsules, and potions? A good place to start is the Nutritional Supplements Buyers Guide by Daniel Gastelu, M.S., a pioneer in the dietary supplement industry and author of Dynamic Nutrition for Maximum Performance. In the buying guide's nearly 400 pages, Gastelu will help you design a supplement program to suit your health needs. Plus, you'll learn which supplements are safe and effective for everyone in the family and the best supplements to beat a variety of conditions, including fatigue, PMS, headaches, stress, and depression. The book is divided into three sections. Part 1 takes you behind the scenes of the dietary supplement industry and explains in detail how supplements are regulated (or, rather, aren't) and labeled. Part 2 will help you design an individual supplement program based on your age, sex, and health goals. Part 3 is an extensive A- to Z-guide that provides an overview, a list of benefits, suggested dosages, and concerns for the most effective dietary supplements and ingredients on the market. The appendix includes a dietary supplement diary and the author's Natural Thin Diet, which is basically a low-calorie, low-fat plan based on the Food Guide Pyramid that emphasizes the consumption of whole foods. --Ellen Albertson From the Inside Flap Nutrition expert Daniel Gastelu has written the ultimate guidebook for anyone who wants to know what they're putting in their bodies before they "pop the cap" on any of today's dietary supplements. By Kelly Skrimstad There are many nutrition books, and food count books on the market with lots of great information about which nutrients are found in which foods. Many of these books also provide information and suggestions regarding nutritional supplementation. While I have found these book immeasurably informative, many times (I think) it is easy to get bogged down, trying to distill information from such a broadly based type of presentation ... especially if you are looking for information on supplements to treat or support a specific condition, or health related issue. What makes this book a standout (for me) is the way it is formatted. Supplements are presented in categories addressing particular points of focus. For example (just a few of the many) target concerns for supplementation include "Joint and Bone Health", "Vision Supplements", "Immune System Stimulation" etc. Information addressing each specific concern is presented in simple, well organized charts which I found to be hugely useful. In addition, this book presents information on each separate supplement in an easy to read format which is detailed enough to give a good overview .... but no so much information that it becomes a chore.Extensively referenced, this very well written and originally formatted book is a genuine pleasure to read. By far the most well organized and "to the point" (general) supplement book I have read to date. I recommend it wholeheartedly! See all 1 customer reviews...
